Cal Poly Athletics officially became the Dennis Ferrell Big West Commissioner’s Cup Champions for the 2023-24 seasons in the Performing Arts Center on Monday.
The Mustangs earned their first Commissioner’s Cup in school history while accumulating the most points in the award’s history.
Cal Poly finished with an all-time high of 149.4 total points, 19.4 total points ahead of second place, and the winners of the previous two years, Long Beach State.
Points are given to each men’s and women’s sport in the Big West Conference based on the order of finish in the regular season and Big West Championship.

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly presented the trophy to Cal Poly’s Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman and University President Jeffery Armstrong.
“We’d been building into this for a couple of years,” Oberhelman said. “We’re elevating our game across the board in all of our sports.”
Virtually every Cal Poly team in the Big West finished in the top half of the conference this past year while the Mustangs won five total Big West Championships.
Men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field and women’s tennis all took home Big West titles while women’s golf finished second in their Big West Championship.
Women’s soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s tennis, men’s golf and softball also all finished in third place in the conference.
Oberhelman says he recognizes two of the more recognized sports in football and men’s basketball aren’t currently up to par with the rest of the athletic department, but he’s confident they have the right pieces in place to see big improvements next season.
“There’s no stopping us at that point because the rest of our sports aren’t going anywhere,” Oberhelman said.
