Freshman Braxton Thomas continued his hot streak offensively, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell to the Broncos on Tuesday. Mia-Isobel Craig | Mustang News.

Cal Poly dropped their midweek non-conference matchup against the University of Santa Clara on Tuesday, May 7 by a score of 4-2.

The Mustangs (28-18, 17-7 Big West) had trouble getting their offense going against a stingy Broncos (22-23, 8-10 West Coast) pitching staff.

Junior catcher Ryan Stafford had his 25-game hitting streak snapped in the contest as the team only mustered three total hits. The hitting streak ties him for second in Cal Poly history with Brandon Roberts in 2004, one behind Ryan Lee in 2009.

The Mustangs only scored two runs or less for the first time since their shutout loss to CSU Bakersfield on Friday, April 12.

Freshman designated hitter Braxton Thomas also continued his hot hitting in the eighth, with his fourth home run in just his eighth collegiate game to cut the deficit to two.

In his eight games played and 31 at-bats, Thomas sports a .355 batting average, a .394 on-base percentage and a .774 slugging percentage.

Santa Clara jumped ahead in the first after sitting down Cal Poly in order, with a leadoff home run.

The Broncos had a combined no-hitter working into the fifth inning, with the only baserunner for the Mustangs being a hit-by-pitch from junior outfielder Dylan Kordic.

Santa Clara poured three more runs on in the fifth with an RBI double and a two-RBI single making it 4-0.

However, Cal Poly could not find any offense past the eighth inning and lost 4-2.

The Mustangs have the week off of Big West Conference play but will host the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a four-game set from Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12 at Baggett Stadium.
