Cal Poly Women’s Golf finished second overall at the Women’s Golf Big West Championship on April 16.

At the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas, Long Beach State finished with a team score of three over par to win the tournament. Cal Poly took second with a score of 26 over par and finished ahead of third place CSU Fullerton by 11 strokes.

The Mustangs had previously won three Big West Championships in a row.

Although the team wasn’t able to repeat its championship success, redshirt junior Jensen Jalufka set a new season scoring average of 72.7, which is the lowest in Cal Poly history.

Jalufka shot a 71 in the final round to take second place individually. She also outperformed everyone in the tournament on par three holes, averaging 2.83 strokes.

Graduate student Kaylee Sakoda, in her final tournament at Cal Poly, led with 40 pars and finished fifth overall.

“We are grateful to have had Kaylee on our team for her final collegiate season,” head coach Courtney Roberts said on GoPoly.com. “This week was another display of maturity and steadiness that she has impacted our program with all season. We wish her all the best as she continues to chase her dream as a pro golfer. She will always be a part of our Cal Poly Golf family.”

The Mustangs combined collected 39 birdies, which tied for the lead. Senior Nicole Neale contributed to twelve of them, the most of any player throughout the three rounds.

Despite not placing first this year, the Mustangs still posed a strong season. They took a top-three spot in tournaments five times out of nine.
