Mustang fans finally got the chance to come out to Mustang Tennis Complex and watch Men’s tennis at home for the first time this season as they played host to the 6-6 DePaul Blue Demons on Friday, March 8, and the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Sunday, March 10.

Cal Poly’s been off to a slow 2-4 start after a tough schedule, falling to No. 16 University of San Diego and No. 42 Oregon, but the Mustangs did not disappoint in their 2024 home opener.

No place like home, Mustangs sweep in home opener

The Mustangs started off strong and only dropped one set, blanking the Demons 7-0.

At doubles Cal Poly scored the overall point, only needing one match after DePaul had to default line three.

Senior Colter Smith and junior Bastiaan Weststrate delivered, taking the line one victory 6-3.

The Demons, down a player, would also be forced to default a singles line, so the Mustangs took a commanding 2-0 lead.

Following a win from freshman Sean Kamyshev at line five, senior Noah Berry clinched the match for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win at line one.

Seniors Joe Leather and Fernando Fonseca grabbing wins to increase the Cal Poly lead.

Westrate snapped his three-match losing streak at line four, winning in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

Mustangs finish 2-0 in opening weekend

After the Mustangs swept their first match against DePaul University, they went on to take down Grand Canyon University 4-1 in matchplay, in their second home match at the Mustang Tennis Complex.

In doubles, Berry and Leather won their match 7-6 while Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev, both true freshmen for the Mustangs, also won their doubles match 6-3.

In singles, Weststrate and Kamyshev both came out on top in their singles matches over the Antelopes. Berry had a dominating start in his singles match, leading five games to zero, and won the match after his opponent retired mid-way through.

The Mustangs are now 2-0 at home this season and look to improve their home record as they will host their next three matches in San Luis Obispo starting this week on Thursday, March 14th against Rice University at 2 p.m. and Loyola Marymount on Saturday, March 16th at 12 p.m. at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
