Cal Poly Men’s Tennis suffered their third loss in a row in a hard-fought match against No. 42 Oregon on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Mustangs (2-4) took on their second straight ranked opponent in the Ducks (6-1) at San Diego, after a tough 7-0 loss to No. 16 University of San Diego.

In doubles, Oregon won at spots one and three in order to take the point.

In singles, the Ducks won at the No. 1 spot to take a 2-0 lead before redshirt senior Joe Leather won 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to give the Mustangs their first point.

The Ducks took another point as junior Bastiaan Westrate fell short against Matthew Burton in a three-set match, 2-6, 6-2, 3-6, pushing Oregon’s lead to 3-1.

Redshirt senior Fernando Fonseca picked up a much-needed three-set victory at the No. 4 spot 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, cutting the lead back down to one. Sean Kamyshev followed at the No. 6 spot with another three-set victory 6-2, 6-7 and 6-1, to tie the score for the Mustangs.

However, Oregon shut down Cal Poly’s hopes, winning the final singles match at the no. 2 spot to secure the 4-3 win.

The Mustangs will look to snap their three-game skid as they travel to the Bay Area next week to take on the University of San Francisco on March 1 and Santa Clara on March 2.
