Cal Poly Men’s Tennis beat Eastern Washington 6-1 but fell to Boise State 6-1 on Feb. 9 and 10, their first matches in three weeks in Boise, ID.
Although they were scheduled to play San Diego State at home on Feb. 4, the game got postponed due to rain.
Leather makes return against Eastern Washington
The Mustangs took the doubles point against Eastern Washington. Senior Colter Smith and junior Bastian Westrate swiftly took their matchup 6-1 in the No. 1 pairing. Seniors Joe Leather and Noah Berry won their matchup in the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point.
Barry took on the No. 1 spot for singles and won both sets 6-1. Freshmen Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev also took wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
These matches were the first two for Leather this season and his return after being injured for several months. He won his singles match 6-3 and 6-4 at the No. 3 spot as the Mustangs took the match 6-1.
Mustangs take doubles point but can’t close out singles against Boise State
Despite taking the doubles point against Boise State, Cal Poly couldn’t come up with the win. The Broncos took the first set, Leather and Berry coming up short 6-3 in the No. 1 group.
Smith and Westrate took their set 6-4. The point came down to the last game with freshmen pair Haviv and Kamyshev in the No. 2 spot. They won their tiebreaker 7-5 and claimed the doubles point.
However, the Mustangs couldn’t keep up in the singles matches. Smith and Leather took their opponents to three sets in the No. 2 and No. 3 spot but fell behind quickly and could not catch up. Smith lost 6-3 and Leather fell 6-2.
Westrate almost scraped the second point for Cal Poly. Losing 6-1 in the first set, Westrate recovered and took the second set 6-4. The third set went back and forth. With the score 6-6 in the final set of the match, Westrate lost the tiebreaker 7-4.
The Mustangs will next take on the Pacific Tigers in their home opener Saturday, Feb. 17. With these games, Cal Poly holds a 2-2 record. Pacific is 3-1 so far, beating Big West opponents UC Davis and UC San Diego.
