Cal Poly cruised to a 6-1 victory against its Big West rival on the road against the UC San Diego Tritons.

The Mustangs (7-6, 2-1 Big West) have not lost to the Tritons (5-11, 1-4 Big West) since 2019.

Dunkle sisters continue their successful season

Cal Poly’s doubles got off to a strong start, giving the Mustangs the early 1-0 lead for the ninth time this season.

The Dunkle sisters, fifth-year Delanie, and third-year Peyton, have been very successful at line No. 1 for Cal Poly.

The convincing 6-1 victory now extends their current win streak to seven straight matches.

Sophomore Kennedy Buntrock and junior Eliza Bates were the second pairing to finish, clinching the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-3 win.

UC San Diego would even the score for a brief moment at 1-1 capturing the first of the singles contests, but that would be the last match they would win all day.

The Mustangs would take the lead right back, courtesy of Delanie Dunkle at line No. 1, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).

Two other Mustangs would go on to win in straights… Peyton Dunkle (7-6 [7-0], 6,2) and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets (7-5, 6-4) putting Cal Poly up 4-1 and clinching the victory.

No ‘Stangs Left Behind

With the match already decided in Cal Poly’s favor, there were still Mustangs still battling it out on courts five and six.

Bates was in a back-and-forth affair and was tied at a set apiece heading into the deciding third set.

Bates convincingly outlasted her opponent taking her down (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), extending the lead to 5-1 Mustangs.

In the last match of the afternoon junior transfer from Paris, Romane Mosse, was battling on court No. 5.

Mosse worked her way back from an early 3-6 deficit in the first set and won the second set 7-5 forcing a third-set super tie-break.

In the super-breaker Mosse’s momentum carrying over from her comeback propelled her to win the 10-point tiebreaker 10-4.

The Mustangs will play Pomona-Pitzer University on Friday, March 29, their last non-conference match before Big West Conference play officially begins.
