On Feb. 5, President Jeffrey Armstrong sent out an email to the Cal Poly community announcing that the official start of Year-Round Operations will be delayed to Summer 2025.

Armstrong said it will allow the university to have more time to engage with their community for both academic and logistic planning.

According to a news release from University Communications and Marketing on Sept. 18, the Year-Round Operations aimed to increase enrollment, while minimizing the impact on the campus. It also would increase funding for the school because of Gavin Newsom’s Funding Compact.

“Think of Year-Round Operation as increasing students’ opportunities at Cal Poly by increasing availability of beds, labs and classrooms, by increasing attendance in the summer, and, ultimately, by slightly lowering attendance during the fall, winter and spring terms,” Armstrong wrote in the release.

According to the release, in the Year-Round Operations, students will get to start Cal Poly in the summer and spend another summer on campus, while spending at least two academic terms off campus.

In the email, Armstrong said the university was able to meet its enrollment goals because they used funding to increase course availability to help students enroll in more units, positively impacting the Full Time Equivalent Students (FTES).

“Not only are we on track to exceed our 2023-24 enrollment (FTES) target but could possibly exceed the 2024-25 FTES target this year, with a lower-than-expected increase in headcount,” Armstrong wrote in the email.

Armstrong ended the email by saying that the future implementation of the Year-Round Operations will help to grow Cal Poly.

“In doing so, we can provide necessary enrollment growth to the CSU while also increasing student access to our campus,” he wrote.
