Last week, Cal Poly ASI hosted its 12th annual Mustang Mile 5K Fun Run. The event took place in front of Perimeter Road at the Recreation Center from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The 5k honors the memory of Carson Starkey, a student who lost his life to alcohol poisoning after a fraternity hazing incident in 2008. In celebration of him, most participants dress up in costume during the run.
“I just like doing it because it’s pretty fun running through campus and like with everyone which you don’t really get to do like every time of the year,” mechanical engineering senior Eliška Martinez said, who ran dressed as an egg.
This year’s first-place winner was food science and nutrition student Matthew McDonald, who completed the three-mile run with a five-minute and 28-second pace.
“I think ‘Oh, this is halfway time to push it,’ it’s more like a meditation I would say instead of like actually thinking about it,” he said.
At the event, education and wellness resources were also available, including Mustangs for Recovery, PULSE and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Also, there was Aware Awake Alive, the program created in memory of Carson and used to educate on the dangers of binge drinking across all CSU campuses.
