Cal Poly track and field traveled to the Bay Area and split up to compete in the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Despite harsh weather conditions, the Mustangs put on several standout performances and etched their names into the record books on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March, 31
The Stanford Classic was highlighted by personal bests and broken records.
Graduate student Will Fallini-Haas returned to the track for the first time since the 2022 Big West Track & Field Championships. In the 5,000, he ran a lifetime best time of 13:55.11, good for fourth in program history.
Fallini-Haas was shortly pushed down to fifth however, as graduate student Davis Bove ran a time of 13:48.0, good for third best in school history, and took fifth in the event overall.
Junior Travis Martin continued to impress in the men’s hammer throw, breaking his own school record again with a mark of 217 feet, good for third in the event. Martin initially broke the record at the UC Santa Barbara Invite and outperformed that throw last week at the Mark Conover Classic.
Redshirt junior Anthony Guerra ran a personal best in the men’s 10,000 with a time of 29:29.26. Graduate student Shelby Daniele placed third in the women’s 100 with a season-best time of 11.71 seconds.
Sophomore Tatiana Cornejo impressed in multiple distance events, earning personal bests in the women’s 800 with a time of 2:09.92, and the women’s 1500 with a time of 4:22.20.
Freshman Jordan Jackson ran the fastest time in the program in 13 years in the women’s 400 with a run of 55.93 seconds. Freshman Nathan Fifer took first in the low pit men’s high jump with a mark of 6-4.
Freshman Ben Kin Ho Tsang ran a personal best in the men’s 400 hurdles with a run of 53.54.
Both 4×400 relay teams put up historic performances in their events. The team of freshman Kalia Estes, freshman Elianah DeMange, junior Katelyn Carro and Jackson ran a time of 3:45.51, the fastest by the program in 16 years.
The men’s team of seniors Chase Walter and Joey Souto, and freshmen Alexander Franco and Levi Romero matched their counterparts with a time of 3:12.63, also the fastest by Cal Poly in 16 years. The men’s team took first in the event, as the final section was canceled due to lightning.
At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, DeMange recorded a personal best with a time of 56.17. Freshman Chris Caudillo also recorded a personal best in the men’s 5,000 with a time of 14:25.20.
