The Cal Poly theatre and dance department will host the One Act Festival event from June 7 – 8 at 8 p.m. and June 9 at 2 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre (Bldg. 45, Rm. 212).
Students enrolled in the Theatre 450 directing class have been collaborating in 10 groups to write, produce, direct and act in a 10-minute play. Each play has a unique style, according to theatre professor Ramón Esquivel.
The plays showcase various genres ranging from comedy, to drama and horror. Some highlight characters’ experiences getting in touch with their emotions or portray a family working through troubled relationships.
Each coming-of-age theme signifies a journey of dramatic change. The characters in each play undergo a transformation from the beginning of the play to the end.
Students were advised to write their script while reflecting on significant moments in their lives. Esquivel wanted the theme of each play to be drawn from personal experience, he said.
However, “these plays take on a life of their own, and these characters become their own people,” Esquivel said.
Esquivel said he is proud to open the theatre department doors to the public to premiere these shows.
Admission to the event is free, however seating is limited. For additional information visit the Cal Poly theatre and dance department website.
